Support
Rudder needs two things: the app on your iPhone (iOS 17 or later) and the rudder program on your Mac.
Set up
Install rudder on the Mac
With Homebrew:
brew install zysuccess/tap/rudder
rudder
rudder runs in the terminal and shows a pairing QR code. To keep it running in the background and start it at login:
rudder install
The agents themselves (Claude Code, Codex, …) must be installed and signed in on the Mac as usual.
Pair your iPhone
Open Rudder and scan the QR code in the terminal. Each code works once and expires after a few minutes. For a fresh code at any time:
rudder pair
To add another computer, install rudder there and scan its code; switch between computers from the pill at the top of the session list.
Which agents work
Claude Code, Codex, Grok, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, opencode, Kimi and pi, whichever are installed on the Mac. Rudder shows the ones it finds and why any are unavailable.
Troubleshooting
Can't connect to my computer
- Keep the computer awake with
rudderrunning. Check in its terminal:rudder status - At home: phone and computer on the same Wi‑Fi, and Settings › Permissions › Local Network is Allowed.
- Away: sign both into the same Tailscale network (see below).
- Still stuck? Run
rudder pairon the computer and scan again.
Reaching my computer away from home (Tailscale)
- Install Tailscale on the Mac and the iPhone and sign both into the same account. Keep MagicDNS on.
- On the Mac, run
rudder pairand scan the new code. rudder notices Tailscale within a few minutes; restarting it makes that immediate. - The app then tries your local network first and Tailscale when you are out.
No notifications
- iOS Settings › Rudder › Notifications must be on, and Focus must allow Rudder.
- The computer sends notifications, so
ruddermust be running and online. - Open the app once after updating it, so it registers again.
macOS asks whether rudder may access Documents
Allow it if your projects live in Documents, Desktop or Downloads; otherwise the agents cannot work there. You can change it later in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Files and Folders.
Lost a phone, or want to unpair one
On the Mac, list the paired phones and revoke the one you no longer have:
rudder devices
rudder devices revoke "iPhone 15" # its name, or the id from the list
It is disconnected at once and its key is deleted, so it can only come back by scanning a new code. This works whether or not rudder is running. rudder uninstall alone keeps paired phones; revoke them first, or use --purge.
Logs
~/Library/Logs/Rudder/com.zysuccess.rudderd.out.log and .err.log. rudder status prints their paths.
Uninstall
rudder uninstall # stop it and remove the login item
rudder uninstall --purge # also delete its data and logs (phones must pair again)
brew uninstall rudder
